The Pentagon confirmed the deployment.
California Governor Gavin Newson said he would sue the state over the federal deployment.
Protests have been taking place since Friday, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided parts of downtown Los Angeles.
U.S. military involvement in domestic law enforcement is not uncommon.
This is the second time President Trump has deployed the National Guard.
